Umless

Umless by Ramify Studios

A little help.

A little help for your next rehearsal. Start with a demo, choose a speaking habit, and make one change at a time.

Your first rehearsal

  1. Open Umless on iPhone, iPad or Mac. Choose Try a demo rehearsal to see the experience without using the microphone.
  2. Open Habits and choose what to practice. Basic includes fillers, pace and long pauses. Your first three saved real rehearsals also include the Pro habits and other Pro features.
  3. Choose your talk above Start rehearsal, then start. Pro lets you create additional talks. Allow microphone access when prompted.
  4. If the app offers Install with iOS, Install with iPadOS or Install with macOS, let the operating system download its speech model. Rehearsal analysis works offline after the model is installed.
  5. End the rehearsal to see your recap. Add a note and inspect a habit or your pace. With Pro or during the trial, compare with the previous rehearsal of the same talk.

Basic and Umless Pro

Basic stays free: practice fillers, pace and long pauses, and get a recap for every rehearsal. You can keep using Basic after the trial.

Umless Pro is a one-time in-app purchase: unlock crutch words, qualifiers, sentence starters, intensifiers, check-ins, repeated phrases and custom habits; create additional talks; see comparisons and trends over time; and receive Apple Watch wrist nudges. There is no subscription. The App Store shows the current price for your region before you buy.

Your first three saved real rehearsals include Pro. Demo rehearsals do not count. The trial does not charge you automatically. After it ends, the trial rehearsals keep their comparisons, while new rehearsals use Basic unless you purchase Pro.

Devices and languages

Umless requires iOS 26 or later on iPhone, iPadOS 26 or later on iPad, or macOS 26 or later on Mac. Live rehearsal analysis needs a device and English speech model supported by Apple’s on-device recognition. The app checks availability before listening.

The optional Apple Watch companion requires watchOS 10.5 or later and Umless on a paired iPhone. Start rehearsals on the iPhone; the Watch does not record or transcribe speech on its own.

The interface and built-in habit phrases are in English. Settings offers English variants for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa. Availability depends on the device and Apple’s speech models.

Common questions

How do I buy or restore Umless Pro?

Open Settings > Umless Pro > Unlock Pro, or choose a feature marked Pro. Apple’s purchase sheet shows your current storefront price and asks you to confirm. You do not need a Umless account.

If you already purchased Pro, use Settings > Umless Pro > Restore purchase while signed into the App Store with the Apple Account that made the purchase. Apple handles the transaction and restoration. Rehearsal history remains local to each device even when your Pro purchase is available on more than one device.

Why is Pro unavailable or waiting for approval?

Loading the App Store price, purchasing and restoring can require an internet connection. If Pro is unavailable, check your connection and try again later. If a purchase is waiting for approval, Pro turns on after Apple reports that it has been approved. Cancelling the purchase leaves your current access unchanged.

Speech recognition and scoring run on your device and work offline after the required speech model is installed. There is no developer-operated service for processing your rehearsals.

How does Umless adapt on iPhone Duo?

The layout follows the available display space. Wider views place the caught word beside a scrollable panel of habit counts, pace and captions. Compact views keep a readable catch area and let the supporting details scroll. Unfold or rotate the phone for more room; you can also scroll the detail panel when all of its contents do not fit at once.

Why is the rehearsal screen mostly empty?

Rehearsals start in Eyes-free mode so you can keep your attention on what you’re saying. Switch to Live details on the rehearsal screen, or change the default in Settings, to see catches, tallies, pace and captions. On iPhone, pocket mode can turn the screen off when the phone is in a pocket or face down.

How do I choose which words count?

Open Habits to enable or disable habits and edit their phrases and goals. Fillers, pace and long pauses are included in Basic. Other built-in habits, repeated phrases and custom habits require Umless Pro or an active trial. A Pro tag identifies a feature that is currently locked.

Some built-in phrases are checked in context. For example, “I like this” should not count as a filler use of “like.” Recognition and context checks can still make mistakes. Custom phrases count when they match.

Why did Umless miss an “um” or count the wrong word?

Apple’s speech recognition may omit a quick or quiet filler or recognize it as another word. Second listen, enabled by default, checks short sounds separately and can recover some missed fillers when the long-form speech model is available. Recovered catches have an ear marker in the recap.

Speak near the microphone in a quieter room. If needed, try Voice processing in Settings. Sounds joined tightly to the next word or hidden by noise can still be missed. The dictation fallback is less reliable for fillers, and Settings explains when it is in use. Treat the recap as a practice aid rather than an exact transcript.

What does “Can’t hear you” mean?

The microphone is delivering only digital silence. Check that Umless has microphone permission and that another app or call is not holding the microphone. Close iPhone Mirroring on your Mac before rehearsing on your iPhone; mirroring can silence the phone’s microphone for apps.

On iPhone or iPad, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. On Mac, check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and the selected sound input. Return to Umless when sound is available. Keep the microphone unobstructed.

How do wrist nudges work?

Wrist nudges require Umless Pro or one of your three trial rehearsals. Install Umless on your paired Apple Watch, then start a rehearsal on iPhone. Wear and unlock the connected Watch. Nudges arrive when a habit builds up or your pace stays outside your target range, so every catch does not trigger a tap.

While Umless is open on the Watch, a habit gets one firm tap; “slow down” uses a falling pattern; “pick it up” uses a rising pattern. Open Umless > Wrist nudges on Watch to try each pattern. When the Watch app is in the background, nudges use watchOS’s standard notification tap.

Enable notifications in the Watch app for background nudges. Send test notification schedules a sample after five seconds. Use Silent Mode for taps without a chime, and check your current Focus and notification settings if nothing arrives. watchOS and the paired-device connection control background delivery, so it can be delayed.

Mute nudges for the rehearsal from the phone or Watch. Gentle, Standard and Frequent cadences are in Settings. The demo updates the Watch display without sending wrist nudges. Basic can still show the current rehearsal and latest recap on the Watch; Pro adds wrist nudges and rehearsal comparisons.

Can I lock my iPhone during a rehearsal?

An explicitly started rehearsal is designed to keep listening while the iPhone is locked, so the Watch can continue receiving updates. Wrist nudges require Pro or an active trial. Keep the microphone clear. Calls and system interruptions can pause access to it; check the iPhone if the Watch asks you to. Ending the rehearsal stops listening.

What does the clarity score measure?

The score combines the habits you practiced, pace and long pauses, plus repeated phrases when that Pro feature is active. Open the score explanation in the recap to see how it was calculated. It is a practice measure and has not been calibrated against audience ratings.

Pro comparisons use the previous rehearsal of the same talk. Comparisons also remain available for rehearsals included in your trial. Select the appropriate talk before you start; you can also move a saved rehearsal to another existing talk in History. Demos are kept separate from real practice trends.

Where are my rehearsals, and can I sync them?

Open History to see saved rehearsals. Pro adds clarity trends and the ability to create additional talks. Select All talks to browse everything on that installation. Umless does not synchronize your full history between iPhone, iPad and Mac. The paired Watch receives live feedback and a short most recent recap.

Use Share in a saved rehearsal to send a text summary. The shared text includes your notes when present, so review it before choosing a destination.

How do I delete my data?

Delete individual rehearsals from History, or delete a talk and its rehearsals from its menu. Edit or remove custom habits in Habits. A separately cached most recent recap on iPhone and Watch may remain until another recap replaces it or the relevant app data is removed.

System backups and copies you share are managed separately. Offloading an iPhone or iPad app keeps its data. Removing the Mac app alone may leave its local storage. Email support for help clearing remaining local data. See the privacy policy for details.

Why does saving need attention?

If a rehearsal could not be saved, Umless keeps it visible for another attempt. Unlock the device, check available storage, then retry saving before closing the app. If the issue continues, contact support with the message shown and your device’s system version.

Which Mac keyboard shortcuts are available?

Use the Rehearsal menu: start with ⇧⌘L, pause with ⇧⌘P, mute nudges with ⇧⌘N, and end with ⌘. (Command–period). Open Settings with ⌘, (Command–comma). Closing Umless’s main window quits the app after saving a running rehearsal; a failed save leaves it open for retry.
